Moments miniscule and momentous, each representing a turning.

Of tide, of fortune, of direction, of life itself.

Space to get lost in, and be found.

Watersheds brings together paintings about the moments when things shift, whether subtly, suddenly or for good. A watershed is both a place and a threshold: the line where water divides and sets off in a new direction. In Colin Husband’s hands it becomes a way to think about change, memory and movement.

Drawing on the force and fragility of the natural world, Husband channels energy onto canvas through gesture, colour and atmosphere. The works move between intimate marks and expansive spaces, inviting both close looking and immersion. These are landscapes felt as much as seen: weathered, remembered and imagined.

At their heart, the paintings are about crossings and edges, the point where certainty loosens and we’re invited to wander, lose our bearings and find our way again.

As Colin puts it:

Let the images speak to you. That is their true meaning.

About the Artist

Colin Husband is an accomplished painter and a well-known commercial and advertising photographer. Trained as an industrial designer, he ran a photographic studio in Sydney for over four decades. He now splits his time between Sydney and a Central Coast bush block, which he shares with his partner Jojo, visiting lyrebirds and black cockatoos, a bob-tailed goanna and a very bolshy wallaby.

His work is held in the permanent collection of Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery and in the Fuji/ACMP Photographers Collection at the Art Gallery of NSW. He has been an Archibald Prize finalist, won the Outback Art Prize, and been a finalist in the Gosford Art Prize seven times. His last solo exhibition, Arboreta Imaginari [imagine trees], was also held at Gallery Lane Cove.

Showing alongside In Between by Peter Day.
