 In Between

Peter Day

Fresh from exhibiting with Personal Structures in association with the Venice Biennale, Sydney artist Peter Day returns to Gallery Lane Cove with In Between, a new exhibition of paintings and sculpture.

In Between continues the landscape inquiry Day began in his earlier Gallery Lane Cove show, SAND: BeacheSANDeserts. That exhibition explored Australia’s coastlines and arid regions. This one turns to the vast country in between.

Drawn from around a decade of work, the exhibition is an empathetic and sometimes playful reflection on rural Australia. The range of styles shows the years over which the works were made, while recurring imagery ties them together, especially the horizon. For Day, the horizon is a defining feature of the Australian landscape and also a metaphor for life: a line between earth and sky that mirrors the human journey between birth and death.

Day’s approach is shaped by his travels and by writing about Australia, including work by Don Watson, Tim Winton, David Marr, Bruce Chatwin, Bruce Pascoe, Richard Flanagan and D. H. Lawrence.
