UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Philip Cox & David Holm

visions of place

28 May – 21 June

Opening Event 4 June 6pm - 8pm

Philip Cox and David Holm are architect-painters whose creative practices reflect a deep connection to the Australian landscape. Both are renowned architects whose built work engages with the natural environment, and this sensibility carries through into their art. Philip draws inspiration from the South Coast of New South Wales, while David is influenced by the Hawkesbury River.

Though each approaches the landscape differently, interpreting its textures, colours, patterns, and forms in their own unique ways. They share a common goal: to express the emotional resonance of the Australian environment. Rather than literal representations, their works evoke the spirit of the land, those stirring, intangible moments that arise when we encounter the interaction of light, land, and sky; the forest floor, creek beds, and open horizons.

The tradition of landscape interpretation runs deep in Australian art, from the earliest works of both Indigenous and European artists. Philip and David continue this lineage, offering distinct yet complementary perspectives on the continent’s vast and varied terrain, from lush coastal regions to arid inland deserts, from mangroves and scrublands to towering forests, and from delicate, sun-bleached hues to the robust ochres and reds of the outback.

Philip Cox has exhibited in both the Wynne and Sulman Prizes, and both he and David Holm have held numerous exhibitions showcasing their ongoing exploration of Australia’s diverse and powerful landscapes.
