Queen Victoria… Bust references the Queen Victoria statue outside the QVB in Sydney, Australia;

formerly from Dublin, Ireland. Wax is used as a symbolic material to critique the purpose of imperial monuments. Its treatment outdoors will enact aspects of decay; perishing in the site. Working from the pretence of the imperial monuments being abstracted and self-referential – my dialogic monuments will act to delegitimise their hegemony as colonial signifiers.

 

Daniel Press is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher living in Sydney. His art projects typically examine how Australian mythology is conceived and maintained over time. His multidisciplinary practice uses blends of textiles and oil paint, as well as printmaking and drawing. He also has a developing sculptural practice using wax- based mediums.

Stools is comprised of two bronze sculptures cast from a single clay form, which are Stooling displayed comfortably on a faded and carpeted surface. The “stools” are simultaneously faecal and phallic but also ambiguous: a grotesquely humorous and oversized plug showing attempts at clogging some undisclosed hole.

Madison Elrick’s practice is driven by material experimentation, manipulating and perverting the chosen substance into absurd formations. Elrick’s most recent body of work, in which Stooling, 2018, is apart, focuses on the somatic acts of this Stooling manipulation and perversion. Each work follows a simple plot, revolving around a subject imprinting upon the material, creating the final form. This form remains to be witnessed, displaying the elements of performativity through the evidenced creation and use of the now object. However, rather than being enthralled by the remaining scene, the remnants are somewhat mundane and unspectacular, almost domestic and ultimately discomforting.

Midden of Compounding Fractures is made up of fragile white porcelain broken, twisted, and ruptured horse legs which have been tossed into a pile, a refleciton of the artists interpretation of the horse racing industry.

 

Clare is currently a PhD. candidate at the University of NSW Art and Design, researching  epigenetics and maternal-foetal programming, having received a generous Commonwealth Government Postgraduate Research Award, and nominated for the Dean’s Award for academic excellence.  Clare works as a sessional academic at the university and holds a Master of Fine Art with a First Class Honours equivalent.

With a driving passion towards her nuanced skills based practice, Clare enjoys working both two and three dimensionally in a variety of media, recreating a new way of seeing in order to challenge mainstream, dominant thought.

Bader's multidisciplinary practice is inquiry-based and fundamentally a discourse on representation. It consists of personal and universal issues framed by linguistics and semiotics. The work moves between figuration and abstraction and a recurring theme is how we see and understand our place in the world. It speaks within its own system and this creation of systems takes the form of lists, enumerations, reiterations and serialities. Rather than didactic, the work playfully urges the viewer not to submit to dominant narratives or limited sets of propositions, but to work through and be attentive to the mnemonic messages disclosed and revealed.

The Utopians is a selection of four of sixteen sculptures that replicates life size books. Each

‘book’ contains a unique and illusionary scenery summoned by the artist. The reference to books actively read by past and present generations serve as a regenerative function in keeping alive the utopian quest.

Ceramic & Newspaper Coiled Vessels consists of a series of small sculptural vessels combining artwork intended the traditional art-making practices of ceramics and basketry techniques.  Cordage from newspaper has been made and used to create the coiled basket top of the vessels. A variety of coloured cotton yarn is used for the stitching detail.

Kelcie’s art practice is multi-disciplinary with a materials based approach primarily working with textiles and encaustic mixed media. She often uses repurposed materials incorporating traditional ‘textile’ techniques learned from her childhood.  These small sculptures combine her love of ceramics and slow stitching. Her practice explores taking something from the everyday and transforming it into something unexpected. Vessels contain things so they are not lost - providing a place where thoughts, words, memories, experiences, both spoken and unspoken can be held.

Germination is a collection of organic hand built ceramic pieces which have native plants imprinted on them, these have left their mark through a process of smoke firing. No Glazes have been used and all colours are form the plants, earth and combustibles used. The inspiration for this work comes from the germination of seedlings, new life, our native flora and of course, nature itself.

Soledad Contardo is a local ceramic artist and teaches at the Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios and currently one of the Artist in Residence.

Caldarulo transfers her designs onto acrylic sheeting, then works in a 3D building mode, creating layered, quasi-sculptural elements. Acrylic's colours, transparency and luminous quality give an extra dimension to the portraits, making them very responsive to the ever-changing lighting conditions. Sometimes they shimmer, sometimes they fade, at other times they disappear except for their shadow retraced on the wall. Ambient light - natural or artificial - has an essential role in her work.

Caldarulo was born in Milano in1965. After working for several years as a registered architect, in 1995 she moved to Sydney where she completed a Master in Sustainable Design (USYD). She has always loved drawing and recreating images of people she loves.

Carmeli is a Sydney based artist specialising in sculpture. His practice explores the realms of nature and human pysche. One of his fascinations is the ability to create fantasy out of reality. He uses materials and processes that extend from his background as a propmaker. He collects and combines the new with the old always trying to find new ways to reuse materials in alternate ways. Zikith uses polymer clays, recycled fabric and jewellery. This is part of an ongoing and growing collection of fantasy art.

Assaf Carmeli is one of Gallery Lane Cove + Creative kids school holiday teachers.

Yves Lee is a rising Sydney-based artist born in Canada, raised in Hong Kong whose work is often situated on the borderline of Eastern and Western culture. Her work fluctuates from large-scale ceramic installation (être-là) to impossibly small detailed ceramic pieces. Her typical use of precious and fragile materials pays homage to her family and culture: the fragility and delicacy of its materials is counter-posed by the resilience or repetition and routine that it represents. Her practice always involves the use of clay due to it's materialistic relationship with memory, which plays a large part in the concept of Yves' works. Fleur is a partial installation within a recent sculpture work être-là. It was built with four different installation within, including fleur, which consists a field of porcelain paper and flowers.

 

Out story unfolds as time progresses, flower blossoms, yet frozen. Memories are in the past, past lives are in the past; everything else is frozen in the present. It is made of moments, memories and time.

Motherload is from an ongoing series that looks at the universal theme of mother and child, while this relationship tends to be mostely sculptured in positive terms of nuture and protection; the relationship can be more complex and nuanced with emotions that lie deep within.

After working as a graphic designer Drewitt Smith went back to painting and reversed the emphasis on how she paints and sculpts with the very occasional graphic design. Everything changed for Drewitt Smith following after suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and consequent hospitalisation in late 03/4.

The DNA of music is made from recycled piano parts. The shape imitates the form of DNA and the colour reflects black notes from sheet music.

Stephanie Powell is an award winning visual artist and designer. Her work expresses social and environmental concerns. Previously the Artist in Residence at Kimbriki Tip, in 2017 Stephanie will commence a residency at Reverse Garbage in Marrickville working with discarded materials.
