GALLERY ASSISTANT & STUDIO TECHNICIAN

POSITION DESCRIPTION

(1 year maternity leave position)

Position Summary

As Gallery Assistant the scope of work encompasses installation and deinstallation of exhibitions, maintaining technical equipment and materials of the Gallery and Studios. This role also supports the Administrator for student enrolments, all front desk duties (welcoming visitors, foyer store sales etc.), school pick up and child minding, and communication with students and teachers. The role interacts and liaises with teachers, students, artists, visitors and artists-in-residence, Employees of Lane Cove Council, government and non-government bodies and community organisations.

 

As Studio Technician you will perform paraprofessional work assisting in the operation and maintenance of Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios ceramics, jewellery and textile, painting, drawing and printmaking studios. These studios host several adults and children’s weekly term classes, alongside one-off workshops, external hire, and kids school holiday programs. This role also oversees the operational requirements of the artist in residence program.

Responsibilities:

Exhibition Installation/deinstallation

  • Install artworks for all exhibitions according exhibition plan

  • Ensure all exhibitions install materials are prepared prior

  • Liaise with artists and artist groups regarding installation and deinstallation logistics

  • Ensure Gallery’s equipment is frequently checked and in good working order.

  • Organise routine maintenance of all technician equipment

  • Coordinate and purchase supplies for term and school holiday programming

Maintain general studio operation

  • To perform specialised and technical duties in support of the four studio spaces.

  • To uphold and maintain the safe use of studio equipment

  • This person would also be able to work within the systems already set up by many years of trial and error of this Studio, while also being flexible in finding new solutions to problems as they arise.

  • Uphold strong working relationships with staff and teachers.

  • Support artists in residence with all studios related requirements and inductions.

  • Coordinate and manage security for all studio spaces, artworks, and artist in residence spaces.

** experience in ceramics preferred:

  • To perform specialised and technical duties in support of the Ceramics studios students, hirers and teachers.

  • Glaze children’s term artworks.

Kiln packing/unpacking & general maintenance

  • Pack and unpack kiln.

  • Batwashing of kiln shelves

  • Timely organisation of kiln servicing and repairs

  • Management of Studio firing production line

Material, equipment supply management

  • Clay trap maintenance

  • Mixing of glazes

Internal & External comms

  • Timely communication with students and teachers relating to a variety of operational requirements (studio cleanliness, collection of artworks)

  • Liaise with parents and adult students as per operational requirements

  • Contact artists and artist groups regarding technical requirements and logistics.

Material, equipment supply management

  • Timely organisation of material and equipment servicing, storage, and procurement.

  • Coordination of maintenance and servicing of all printmaking equipment, painting, sewing machines and textiles equipment.

Update and maintain all studio related documentation:

  1. WHS documents

  2. Studio signage

WHS

  • To uphold and maintain the safe use of studio equipment

  • Perform studio inductions- Oversee studio induction for all teachers, hirers and artists in residence.

School Pick up and child minding

  • Pick up of after-school class students on designated days and minding the students until classes begin.

  • Minding students in between classes during school holiday program

 

** Preferred candidates have sufficient knowledge and experience to perform minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. Knowledge in Printmaking processes and procedures desirable.

 

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications Required Any combination of training, education, and experience

equivalent to intermediate to advanced training with specialized coursework ideally in ceramics, secondary in printmaking, painting and drawing or textiles.

Must have Working with Children's check.

Communication & interpersonal skills

  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and written.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Proven ability to be self-directed, motivated and have strong organisational skills.

  • Experience in conflict management

  • Proven ability to use outlook, excel, google drive & word.

 

Manual/Physical

  • Capacity to keep up with the physical demands of managing and maintaining busy studio spaces.

Hours & Availability:

Part time (on site only) role performing duties on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (9am - 5pm) and alternate Saturdays (10am - 2:30pm). Capacity to work extended hours for Openings, installs and deinstalls. Minimum one year commitment. 

Pay: $28 per hour
