Dustpan and Brush

Melted polylactic acid (PLA) 3D printed plastic material

Matt’s design and research interests center around 3D printers and other small-scale
digital fabrication technologies, and how they can be effectively used in makerspaces
and domestic settings. Through a sustainability and speculative design approach, he
incorporates and re-purposes a broad range of media, including wood, concrete,
plastic, and discarded objects for his current Ph.D research.

No matter how many times the life-cycle of plastics are extended, plastic materials
will ultimately need to be disposed of. These satirical artifacts are designed to
highlight how plastic recycling is seen as a way of reducing our environmental
impact but, inevitably, is a down-cycling material process.
